Meet Moyo, a Graduate Employer’s Agent based in our Brentford, London office. Since joining Welling in 2024, she’s been working on key projects, including Montem Lane in Slough and Brook Avenue in Wembley, all while expanding her expertise in contract administration.
Outside of work, Moyo has a passion for music – playing piano and alto saxophone, as well as belting out karaoke classics – it runs in the family! To enjoy some relaxing downtime she’s taught herself to knit and crochet. She’s also a trained cocktail bartender and a keen traveller, having visited 10 countries in the past three years. Oh, and she’s rubbed shoulders with A-listers Will Smith, Margot Robbie and Jared Leto.
What’s your role at Welling, and how did you get into the industry?
I’m a Graduate Employer’s Agent based in our Brentford, London office, working closely with the wider team of Surveyors and Clerk of Works. My role is all about representing our clients and working with contractors, and other key stakeholders to ensure projects run smoothly.
I graduated from Nottingham Trent University with a BSc (Hons) in Quantity Surveying & Commercial Management and joined Welling in September 2024. During my placement year with Lendlease, I worked alongside Employer’s Agents from the contractor’s side, which gave me a great perspective on my role today.
What projects are you currently working on?
I’m assisting on several projects, including 74 units at Montem Lane in Slough for our client SNG, and 126 units at Brook Avenue in Wembley for MTVH to name a few. I’m also involved in closing out open defects on projects like Summer Lane in Pagham and Edgar Road in Hounslow.
What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned so far?
Never get complacent. Every day is a learning opportunity! The construction industry is full of acronyms and jargon, and I’m constantly learning new terminology. For example, Golden Brick is a recent one. It’s essentially a key stage in construction that has contractual and VAT implications.
What do you enjoy most about your job, and what are your career goals?
Right now, I’m focused on learning as much as possible, shadowing senior colleagues, and gradually taking on more responsibility so I can lead projects in the near future. My ultimate goal is to become chartered.
What was your first job, and what did you want to be growing up?
At 17, I worked as an English and Maths tutor for children aged 5-16, alongside a bartending job to save for travelling. I ended up visiting Izmir, Turkey, and Greece.
As a kid, I dreamed of being a singer-songwriter and touring the world. Music has always been a huge part of my life – I grew up on disco, listening to Kool & The Gang, Michael Jackson, and Whitney Houston. I still love karaoke, and I’ve been known to still hold concerts in my bedroom (for my family – or teddies!).
What do you like to do outside of work?
I have loads of hobbies. I recently taught myself to knit and crochet and I find this really relaxing. I’ve made wearable pieces and even doilies for my table. I also play piano and alto saxophone, and I love travelling. I’ve visited 10 countries in the past three years, with highlights including the Dominican Republic, Switzerland, and Malta. Next on my list: Jamaica and Brazil!
What’s the one thing you can’t live without?
Music. You can take everything away but just leave me with music and I’ll survive! I come from a big musical background, with my grandma being a choirmaster, and both my grandad and my mum playing the piano. My mum also sings, and my dad was a DJ. My siblings and I can all sing (but I’m the best!), so it’s safe to say it runs in the family!
Any fun facts or claims to fame?
I’m a trained cocktail bartender and have worked in bars for 6-7 years – I still spend weekends testing out new cocktail recipes.
My claim to fame would have to be meeting Will Smith, Margot Robbie and Jared Leto at the Suicide Squad premiere when I was 16. One of the perks of being right at the front of the line.
What’s your guilty pleasure?
I love desserts, especially if they have chocolate ganache or salted caramel. Salted caramel might be the best thing ever!
What’s something on your bucket list for 2025?
This year I’ve made it my goal to learn how to play the drums – it’s been on my list forever…alongside going to the gym more.
