Meet Matthew Christopher (Matt), an Associate at Welling, who is key in supporting the Bristol office. With over a decade of experience in the construction industry, Matt has worked his way up from a labourer on domestic projects, to an experienced Quantity Surveyor, bringing hands-on expertise and strategic oversight to major housing projects.

Beyond the office, Matt is a passionate rugby player, an occasional surfer on Cornwall’s West Coast and a coffee lover who enjoys a morning caffeine kickstart to his day, with a soft spot for a French roast!

Discover more about Matt’s journey, his insights into the industry and why he believes that every day is a school day.

What’s your role at Welling and where are you based?

My position at Welling is a Quantity Surveyor and Associate operating from the Bristol office. I also support the business as part of the leadership team on operational matters, as well as supporting other Surveyors and members of the project team.

What projects are you currently working on?

I am involved in several key projects, including two for Bristol City Council which are about to start on site; the Former Police Station and Cameron Centre and secondly, Branwhite Close in Lockleaze. These are both residential developments consisting of houses, low-rise flats and commercial space.

I’m also working on two Joint Venture projects between Vistry and Goram Homes, both in Bristol where my role as Joint Venture Supervisor requires me to monitor and report on the implementation of the Development Agreement, as well as attend regular JV Board Meetings.

These projects are all focused on delivering much-needed housing at a time when the market faces significant challenges.

How did you get into the industry?

I started as a labourer/apprentice, which gave me invaluable hands-on experience. From there, I worked my way up to Senior Surveyor with another consultancy before joining Welling as an Associate. Along the way, I completed a Diploma in Surveying Practice (DipHE) and a BSc (Hons) in Quantity Surveying at the University College of Estate Management in Reading.

What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned in your career?

That every day is a school day. You’re always learning, whether it’s from working with different organisations, or understanding varying priorities and requirements. Keeping an open mind is key.

What do you love most about your job and plans for the future?

I love the variety – working with different people and building relationships with our team, Clients and Developers. Looking ahead, I hope to help Welling become a household name in the West and strengthen our relationships across the business.

What was your first ever job?

I was a bartender at an Alpine Activity Centre during my A-levels. I quickly realised I preferred drinking the beverages over serving them!

When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?

A professional sportsperson, either in football or rugby. I didn’t start playing rugby until I was 15 and from then I aspired to be Martin Johnson, England’s 2006 World Cup-winning captain.

Do you have any personal hobbies?

I play rugby at my local club, mostly in the second row and back row. When I get a free weekend, I love heading to Cornwall for some surfing. I’ve been doing it for about 10 years, but I’d love to be able to surf without a wetsuit!

What’s your guilty pleasure?

Coffee. I’m very particular about it – nothing beats a freshly ground French roast in the morning to set you up for the day!

What’s the one thing you can’t live without?

My three-year-old German Shepherd keeps me on my toes!

What’s your ideal holiday?

Somewhere with sun, waves and a cold beer – maybe somewhere like Praia do Norte in Portugal, although I certainly wouldn’t risk going in during a storm!

What’s on your hit list for 2025?

I am currently renovating my house and would like to get this finished. It’s taking longer than expected – like most construction projects!

I’m also trying to step up my training in advance of the next Rugby season, to ensure that I can play the best level of rugby I can, whilst I still can.
