Meet Gareth Clayton, one of the driving forces behind Welling Partnership’s success in delivering high-quality projects across South Hampshire and Sussex. Gareth brings a unique blend of hands-on experience and in-depth knowledge of construction materials, shaped by years on site and his sales background.

Now working as a Clerk of Works, Gareth conducts site inspections over many of our projects in the South. Whether it’s overseeing the eco-focused Horsebridge Hill development or urban developments in Eastleigh, he combines his industry insight with a passion for quality assurance.

Outside of work, you’ll find him exploring the South Downs on his mountain bike, often squeezing in a pub stop or two along the way.

Gareth’s mantra? “Maintain relationships, never burn bridges.” It’s advice that has served him well and helps him to carve great client relationships.

Describe your role at Welling?

I’m a Clerk of Works, responsible for conducting routine site inspections on projects ranging from South Hampshire to East and West Sussex. Essentially, my role ensures everything is up to standard and in line with specifications.

Which projects are you currently working on?

Right now, I’m inspecting Horsebridge Hill in Newport, Isle of Wight, a new 127-unit social housing project for SNG featuring timber frames, air-source heat pumps and EV charging points. Recently, I completed a build-to-rent project for Eastleigh Borough Council at the old post office on Eastleigh High Street.

Can you share your career journey?

After starting in the construction industry selling tiles and materials, I travelled extensively across SE Asia and Australia, working in a builders merchant in Sydney amongst other roles. Later, I moved to London to sell materials for Hilti, contributing to iconic projects like The Shard. I then worked for six years as a Site Manager. I joined Welling in Feb 2023, where my experience with materials and management came full circle.

What valuable lesson have you learned?

Maintain professional relationships. It’s essential not to burn bridges—good relationships always pay dividends.

What do you enjoy most about your role?

I love the flexibility of this role – I can manage my own time effectively. Another perk is the fresh air and physical activity. I easily hit 10,000 steps going up and down stairs and moving between sites. I don’t like to be stuck behind a desk all day!

What’s your focus area?

Attention to detail is where I thrive. It’s been drilled into me from my days working in construction sales. I enjoy examining the finer points of specifications and instructions, ensuring projects meet exacting standards. Whether it’s the placement of materials or compliance with manufacturer guidelines, I like digging into the small details that make a big difference.

What was your first job?

My first job was a paper round, but it didn’t last long because getting up early wasn’t my strong suit! My first proper job was working in a café at Staunton Country Park, where I made cakes and flapjacks. This sparked my passion for cooking – but I’m still rubbish at sponge cakes!

What was your childhood dream?

As a kid, I dreamt of being a musician. I played guitar in pubs and was part of a college band. I loved indie pop bands like Oasis and Ocean Colour Scene. Music still plays a big role in my life, and I go to Victorious Festival every year.

What do you enjoy outside of work?

Trail running and mountain biking are my go-to activities, but I’m also a DIY Dad, basically fixing all the things my son breaks!

What’s one thing you can’t live without?

My mountain bike is a must-have. I try to go on weekly rides across the South Downs with friends. We’re off on a night ride next – most likely with a few pub stops along the way home!

What’s one of your bucket list activities?

I’d love to go bike-packing through Europe, starting in the UK and finishing somewhere like Italy.
