Meet George Royle, one of our Employer’s Agents based in our Bristol office. With a degree in Quantity Surveying & Commercial Management from Nottingham Trent, George joined Welling in 2022. He works on a variety of residential schemes, from Bristol in the West across to Reading in the East, as well as a site up in Telford working on behalf of Homes England.
What is one valuable thing you’ve learned in your career so far?
Don’t suffer in silence – what may seem challenging to you could be second nature to someone else. There’s always something to learn from your colleagues, especially those with years of experience in the industry.
What’s your work background?
I left school unsure of the career path I wanted to take. I initially got into landscaping, which sparked my interest in how things are built. After enjoying it in the summer and absolutely hating it in the winter, I knew I wanted a job that let me be outdoors but with the option of a warm office when needed! I went on to study Quantity Surveying & Commercial Management at Nottingham Trent University, worked in London for a couple of years, and then moved back home to join Welling in October 2022.
What do you love about your role and what are your hopes for the future?
I love being part of a project from the very start through to completion – it’s incredibly rewarding to see the final result that everyone has worked so hard to bring to life. With multiple schemes on the go, I also enjoy the opportunity to meet and work with a wide variety of people from all walks of life. Looking ahead, my goal is to become a Chartered Surveyor.
What was your first ever job?
I worked as a pot wash at a local pub when I was 15. I kept at it for a while because I had my sights set on pulling pints once I turned 18! I finally got to serve a few drinks, but it wasn’t long before I decided I’d rather be on the other side of the bar, which led me into landscaping!
As a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?
I wanted to follow in my dad’s footsteps and become a pilot. Unfortunately, my eyesight (or lack of) wasn’t in my favour!
What is your favourite sport?
I’m a huge fan of American sports, with ice hockey being my top pick. You’ll find me cheering on the Dallas Stars!
Closer to home, I’m a die-hard Bristol Rovers fan (for better or worse). I get to as many games as I can – right after the cricket season wraps up, as I play throughout the summer.
Would you rather be able to fly, or breathe underwater?
Fly 100%. Flying is one of my favourite parts of a holiday!
What’s your guilty pleasure?
After years of giving it a hard time, I have to admit I watched the latest season of Love Island—and, regrettably, actually quite enjoyed it. I still maintain it’s absolute rubbish and could be drastically condensed down to half the length, but I’m just there for the drama!
Name one thing on your bucket list
To run a marathon – fingers crossed this one will be ticked off on 27th October 2024 when I run the Dublin Marathon!
I’m raising money for Macmillan Cancer Support, following a family bereavement this year. If anyone would like to donate, my JustGiving Page is https://www.justgiving.com/page/george-royle-dublin2024.
What is the one thing you can’t live without?
Guinness – perhaps one of the reasons why I chose the Dublin Marathon! I will have well and truly earned that pint.
